Magnificence: An Overview

Our Fearless Leader (aka Areada) wrote:I would like to briefly explain, where everyone can see, my thoughts about Magnificence. Back in the old MG days, we had the land of Twin Skies to roleplay in and make up stories about. It was a good ol' default world for our characters to run around in. But now, we don't have that anymore. So Magnificence is our default world and I would like you to know that yes, the world IS, in fact, our sandbox. So go ahead, create wild stuff, name some countries, name some towns, think up a dysfunctional government or two, maybe a good old incestuous royal family (always makes for fun assassin work), and so on. Such information will be compiled into an easy to reference thread (hopefully), and I sincerely hope that it will help us have a good place to start when thinking up new roleplay ideas.

Magnificence, also known as Magsy by some, is the brainchild of our Fearless Leader, Areada. However, it is the duty of all of us to fill this relatively vacant world with creations of our own as well. This post shall endeavor to detail everything we’ve come up with about Magnificence!

Magnificence is a large continent containing roughly thirty kingdoms and territories. Long ago, a pact was made by the people of Magnificence and the thirty territories were made independent of each other. For those who wished to escape the confines of society, the lawless territory known as the Chaos Lands was set aside apart from any formal government.

This thread is for easy reference to established information in our RP universe. It should really help to avoid contradictions as things progress. Post your additions or changes below and I’ll edit them in! Please post brief character descriptions for your players and NPCs as well, unless you really want to keep those one-line thingies for some reason.

Territories

The Chaos Lands: An expansive, lawless territory in the centre of Magnificence. We haven’t come up with much more than that quite yet.

The Kingdom of Chayne Sa: A territory located somewhere in the western parts of Magnificence. Chayne Sa is known for the fine wine produced by its vineyards, soap, and SO-powered power tools.

Points of Interest:
The University of Vague Subjects (UVS): A university that teaches more unconventional subjects than most, though it is still held in high regard. The Head of Magical History is Professor Reginald Kermit.

The Town of Clueless: A small town of roughly 800 persons. The central town area has shops and an outdoor marketplace. It has an excellent school and three wineries. There are also outlying houses and farmland. The town is separated from the main road by thirty miles, twenty of which are swampland. A messenger arrives in town monthly with news of the outside world. Clueless apparently comes from the words of a forgotten language, cluere (meaning clever) and elesse (meaning pigeon). The nearby waterfall contains the mysterious sparkling green substance, SG, which is also found in the riverbed.

Grimboran Magisterium: The original home of Artur and Gwyneth Lore. It is a snowy territory, very far to the north. Few people now live there.

Points of Interest:
The Cloud Spire: An ancient structure that has stood for well over a thousand years. The tower reaches above the clouds, which is why it is so named. During its time, magic-users from across the continent were welcome to study there. However, it was abandoned centuries ago after a great disaster.

Godwin Kingdom: The kingdom's elite sorcerers produced the hanforb bird, and presumably other advances.

Magical Substances and Artifacts

Sparkly Orange (SO): This is the primary source of magic in Magnificence. It is a sparkling orange dust, powder, or dirt that is relatively common throughout Magnificence. It’s probably a mined mineral, but this is not yet clear. It becomes a liquid when frozen, defying natural laws. Its uses are vast, and it can be used to enchant items (such as horseless wagons and Chayne Sa’s power tools). The more complex the magic, the more SO is required and the Diagrams written must be more complex and numerous.

Sparkly Green (SG): A sparkling green dust, powder, or dirt found in the bed of a river near Clueless. Its significance is not yet known.

Diagrams: The runes and glyphs that must be drawn to perform more complicated spells and enchant items.

Blood: The practice of blood magic has been taboo for many centuries, and knowledge of it has waned severely though it certainly hasn’t disappeared entirely. Blood makes a suitable substitute for SO when a desperate magic-user can’t manage to get a hold of the orange substance. The blood of higher beings (humans, dwarves, etc.) is more useful than that of animals. Certain spells require blood, and cannot be cast using SO.

Creatures:

Rhorzan: Large reptilian creatures which resemble wolves. They can be trained as mounts.

Hanforb: Green-coloured birds, artificially created by the Godwin Kingdom to deliver death paperwork to couriers, which is to be filed at the Ministry of Appropriate Response.

Crows and Ravens: Mostly just ordinary birds, but they cannot be told apart from the servants of the Red Witch.

The Races of Magnificence

Humans: They are…. Humans. An average, run-of-the-mill species, short-lived and relatively dumb. There are exceptions, but few and far between. They also breed like rabbits and can be found all across Magnificence.

Dwarves: Short and stout, dwarves are a physically strong and long-lived compared to humans. Many dwarves live underground, but there are surface dwarves. The more traditional dwarves appear to regard males as superior to females (or at least Doc does). Some surface dwarves are less traditionalist and may even shave their beards. In some fantasy settings female dwarves also grow beards. This hasn’t been established in Magnificence yet, but I don’t believe they do.

Elves: Pointy-eared humanoids, considered quite attractive when compared to other species. Completely hairless, except for the top of their heads. Traditionally, they prefer to live among nature. That doesn’t stop some from taking up residence in cities though. They’re longer-lived than dwarves, and possibly ageless, but that hasn’t been decided yet. Mentioned only.

Werewolves: Mentioned only.

Dryads: Mentioned only.

Faeries: Mentioned only.
