Implicit Association Test - Lovers of Psychology Come Here! Empty Implicit Association Test - Lovers of Psychology Come Here!

Alright, the link I am about to post goes to Harvard's "Implicit Association Test."

I learned about these tests in Psychology class, and they are really fun. However, it is important to know that these are implicit tests, and NOT simply questionnaires. People can lie on questionnaires to get the results they want. It's very difficult to trick this test into giving the results you want.

Warning: You'll likely have your eyes opened to subconscious stereotypes you hold. The tests are designed to reveal things about you that may not even be aware of yourself. I wasn't very happy with my results, because they show me to be biased. And they WILL show you to be biased. Everyone's biased, whether they like it or not. I'll post the results I got from three tests I took, to show you what I mean.

1. I have a slight preference towards light-skinned people than dark-skinned people. (This is likely due to media portrayal and living in a predominately white community)
2. I have little-to-no preference of Other People over Arab-Muslims. (I am Muslim, which combated negative media portrayal to get me this excellent result)
3. This test was a comparison of which of four religions (Christianity, Islam, Judaism, and Buddhism) I have an unconscious preference for, my chart is as follows:

My own biases clearly show here. This is a really fun tool, but you may learn things about yourself you don't like... ooooooh, implicit tests!!! *tries to be spooky*
So, please take a few of these tests. I love them, if only because I love psychoanalysing myself. The link is as follows, and during the tests you'll be asked for your postal code, but you can leave it blank.

Your data suggest little or no association between Female and Male with Career and Family.

Same with native americans and foreign and white americans and american! YES. Little to no association with these pairings. (as in, I don't associate the words in the pairs with each other much)

THESE ARE FUN

I bet I'm really religiously biased!

*takes more tests*

One made me really upset...

I appear to have a moderate preference for heterosexual people over homosexual people.

I openly support LGBT, was an active member of my high school's Gay-Straight Alliance, and have several gay and lesbian friends. Do I really have a bias I'm unaware of? It's frightening...

Well, do these tests gauge association bias or moral bias? Seems to me those are two different things...

They gauge associative bias, not moral bias. The fact that I make unconcious accociations that go against my moral code is... interesting.

My results suggest little to no association between Native Americans and White American as being more American than the other. However... I'm Canadian, so I'm not certain how much of this test was moot for me.

Unfortunately... I associate males with career and science, and females with family and liberal arts. That was disappointing. I'm a male liberal arts student myself, after all. I guess the fact that my mother doesn't work would definitely colours my bias there... phooey.

I don't want to be judged as a bad person Sad

Oh, Nayaby, you have hit upon the great struggle...

Would you like a rant? I can write one. It might be helpful. It utilizes not only things I have learned in psychology, but also that I have learned through living and watching people living!

If you really want to write a rant, I'd be pleased to read it.

I'm not too upset by my implicit biases though. I realize that my unconscious thought is affected by media portrayal, and the socio-cultural factors of my upbringing by first-generation immigrants from a culture with less liberal values. It's that beautiful dichotomy that creates a conflict of biases within myself, with my conscious moral standing in a different zone than my inner implicit biases.

ABSOLUTELY.

In a way, we're conditioned to the majority, you know? There are an overwhelming amount of heterosexual couples in literature, film, etc. and these things get associated. The best thing you can do is to acknowledge that these things happen, and treat and think of people equally all the same.
